CRTC smooths ethnic broadcasting rules
by: Jul 26, 1999 Print

Expanded services, simplified rules, but mostly an emphasis on the status quo, are key features in a new crtc policy for ethnic broadcasters.

In a statement issued July 16, the crtc announced that in order to ensure quality and wide-ranging ethnic television and radio broadcasts, it will allow non-ethnic stations to air unlimited ethnic programming. At the same time, it will also simplify the definition of what qualifies as ethnic. Still, much of the 1985 Ethnic Broadcasting Policy, which the crtc considers to be serving the ethnic community well, remains intact.
