Report on Independent Production
Independent production companies
by: May 15, 2000 Print
The following is an alphabetical list of Canadian independent production companies as well as the names of feature film and television projects produced in 1999. Projects in development - some of which went into production over the year - are also listed. The chart on pp. B2-3 tracks the amount individual companies spent on production and development in 1999. Information was provided for both lists by companies in response to a questionnaire from Playback.
Playback asked companies to submit information pertaining only to those projects in which they participated as a financial partner, and requested that, in the case of coproductions, companies report spending based on their portion of the budget. We stipulated that dollar figures reflect only spending attributed to the calendar year 1999.
Production companies were also asked to indicate separately the amount of service work they completed, in order to track the total volume of production.
In some cases where companies chose not to respond, Playback estimated production volumes. There were occasions, however, when we could not do an estimate because of a lack of data. Some of these companies - which have been known to represent significant production volume, and which may have been mainly in development mode in '99 - are omitted from the list. Examples are: Norstar Filmed Entertainment, Aska Film Productions, Serendipity Point Films, Arto-Pelli Motion Pictures, Sienna Films, and Portfolio Entertainment.
