by: Nov 13, 2000 Print

The late Maruska Stankova, former head of the Directing, Acting and Writing for Camera workshop, will be honored by friends, family, students and colleagues at a tribute Tuesday, Nov. 28, 5:30 p.m. at the Arts and Letters Club of Toronto, 14 Elm Street.

The event, entitled A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Maruska Stankova, will include a 10-minute video featuring clips, photos and interviews with those who knew her. Stankova, who passed away in August, emigrated from the former Czechoslovakia to Canada in 1967. She performed both on the stage and in films, garnering a Genie nomination for her performance in Dreams Beyond Memory. Her dawc workshop, created in 1982, was attended by nearly 800 students, including Atom Egoyan and Paul Gross. One hundred and twenty-four short films were produced through the program.

The evening is being organized by Andra Sheffer, executive director of the Independent Production Fund; Brenda Blaike of the Harold Greenberg Fund; James Weyman of the Ontario Film Development Corporation; dawc board member Don Haig; former students Gilbert Reid, Briar Emond and Naomi Wise; student and dawc director advisor Jane Thompson; and student and dawc screenwriter advisor Jill Golick.

So far financial assistance for the tribute has been provided by the ipf, Harold Greenberg Fund, Writers Guild of Canada, Shaw Fund, ofdc, Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television and the Directors Guild of Canada. *
