The Toronto Film Critics Association has announced its picks for 2000, with awards going to Gary Burns' waydowntown for best Canadian film and Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon for best film.

Steven Soderbergh was named best director for Traffic.

The best screenplay award went to Kenneth Lonergan for You Can Count on Me.

Benicio Del Toro won for best performance, male for his role in Traffic with Laura Linney picking up the female equivalent for her role in You Can Count on Me.

Best supporting performance went to Tobey Maguire for Wonder Boys and Zhang Ziyi for Crouching Tiger.

Denis Villeneuve's Maelstrom was voted best Canadian runner up.

To be eligible for a tfca award, a film must have made it theatrical debut in Toronto during the calendar year.

The association will hold an awards dinner later in January. *
