Calgary: The slayings of four RCMP officers in small-town Alberta will be revisited this month as Calgary's Seven24 Films and Toronto's Slanted Wheel Entertainment roll cameras on To Serve and Protect: Tragedy at Mayerthorpe, an MOW for CTV.

The film, from a screenplay by Andrew Wreggitt (Shades of Black), recounts the shooting deaths of four officers in 2005 during a standoff with local man James Roszko, to be played by Brian Markinson (Eight Days to Live). Henry Czerny (Clear and Present Danger) stars as a fictional RCMP corporal. Ken Girotti (3 Lbs., 24) directs.

"We want to tell this story in honor of the four men who gave their lives in the line of duty," said Jon Slan, who exec produces with Rachel Rafelman through Slanted Wheel (Plague City), in a release.

Seven24's Jordy Randall, who exec produces with Tom Cox (Brokeback Mountain), notes that the producers have been in touch with the families of the deceased.

"Having the input of the families in undertaking this project was paramount and we couldn't have gone forward without their confidence in us," says Randall.

Tragedy at Mayerthorpe, which is the working title, will shoot in Calgary and the nearby towns of Irricana and Cochrane until April 3.

Funders include the Alberta Film Development Program, the Canadian Television Fund and the Cogeco Program Development Fund.
